I am trying to install a package using apt (r-base) but among the packages apt
would like to remove in the process includes the kernel image!! I have tried
installing other packages also (emacs and ess), but I get the same message.
My sources.list and an illustrative output of apt-get is reprodu
o machines in a lab.
Yesterday, I installed redhat on one of them because the machines could
not have been spared for more days for experimenting. But I still have
one machine with a functioning woody. Let me see where does that take me.

I managed to install debian but after recreating the partitions and
surrendering my windows partition as well. But the problem now is that
it is not able to configure the right monitor and video adoptor.
This is a compaq machine with an intel 815 chipset. Monitor is Compaq V570.
