I get the same problem with or without a .emacs file in my home directory.

The area without text is the right color. I even tried
emacs -bg Blue -fg Green (from the command line)
This gives a Blue backgr
background, just where the text is or
where the cursor has moved).
I'm thinking there is some extra variable set somewhere which keeps the
text black. I have had no luck finding it.
Any ideas?
