I am able to compile the kernel for i386, however no initial ram disk
image is created, i did with the help of mkinitramfs though it was
empty, still unable to boot.

thats true, however ntpdate does seems to work even after
ntpdate[26430]: no servers can be used, exiting. Server does sync
times correctly.
server 0.debian.pool.ntp.org
server 1.debian.pool.ntp.org
server 2.debian.pool.ntp.org
