I have a problem with the mentioned combination. When i run pon to
establish a ppp-connection pppd immediately exits with the error message
"tcgetatt (5)"
During booting it says ppp Version 2.2.0. But i installed ppp2.3.5. Now,
do i need to upgrade my kernel ? I´ve seen some patches in var. n

not necesserily, first the system asks for authentication using pap, but
as your system denies, the remote system offers chap auth.
I had the same symptom after upgrading to hamm. I solved it by putting
my username in double quotes
for newer kernels (2.0.xy ) use "make menuconfig" or make xconfig.
Both are more comfortable and the option for ISO 9660 support is there
too.
