Actually, if you wanna use systemd-boot your kernel and initramfs must be
stored on the ESP. But anyway 500MB looks like overkill.

I don't understand why touch is the right thing, it doesn't create
directories either, just files.
Care to explain why did you chose touch instead of ">"?
