you can turn it off by merely typing in the word "halt" when you are logged in
as root. wait for the words "power down" to appear and then turn off your
computer.

i am new to debian but have managed to get a working set-up using 2.1.
however, i am unable to connect to the net. when i try to invoke ppp, i get a
message saying that there is no pppd module. what do i do? at what stage in the
install is the ppp module loaded? i thought that this was an integral
