Look in the error_log and access_log and see what it prints there. If this

Hmm... dpkg -l will output list of all packages along with their state. This
is useful for quick glance. If You want more info either use dpkg -s or
dsele

dselect didn't run apt-get clean and left *all* packages in
/var/cache/apt/archives. This should be documented somewhere.

I had similar effects with xdm and some older (that is "frozen") xbase. All
