Any ideas where the problem might be?

the 'sound industry' needs to arrive at a common protocol before Linux
could achieve generic sound support. Instead, they climbed in bed with
Mr. Gates.
Meanwhile, we'd be happy to try to help you compile a kernel if you
provide some details as to the "dismal results"

problem is that nothing is coming out of the speakers. I can hear music
by plugging headphones into the CD drive.
So which audio device is workman using? I figure that I just need to
change permissions somewhere, but I'm not sure where.

extremely grateful for all the work that has gone into Linux
and Debian, and I'm out here recruiting new users and will continue to do
so, even if I have to compile a kernel for every one of them. Just wanted
to put my two bits in.

According to the man pages, xhost uses a file called "/etc/X*.hosts". I
haven't got this file. There are several /etc/host* files, none of which
control X access, and no *host* files in /etc/X11. So where is the file
that xhost uses to control access to my X server?
Thanks

any system tools I can use to try to diagnose the problem? Is there any
chance that it is an OS issue and not a Netscape problem?

ed as to why I'm the only
one having this problem, as I can't find anything about it on DejaNews.
Did everybody else just change the permissions on the audio devices? Do I
need to reinstall Netscape with the .deb package now that I have sound
support in my kernel?
thanks,

The brutal solution is to change the permissions on /dev/dsp, but I'm
trying to learn and to do it the right way, so if anyone can explain to me
why netscape runs under my user ID, how I can change it, or even what
commands I might use to investigate the problem (strace

runs Netscape as group audio?

Is there a Debian package for xanim? I have the source code already, I'm
just being lazy.

configure X by running the command xf86config, which walks you through a

I did try to run the commands as you describe, and still got 'not found',
so, if you suspect the shell, what does that mean? What can I do about
it?
Thanks

that will let me do that, or do I need to scrounge up a DOS floppy? Is
the kernel looking for a root file system on the hard drive? If so, how
do I tell it to expect in elsewhere, like on root.bin?
