for me, the problem existed with xdm, and kdm. I didn't try gdm. All
other window managers worked fine. Just the kde enviroment would fail
on startup.

I had the exact same problem ... except I use kdm. You must have
a lot more patience than myself. It only took me a few hours
before I decided to just back up all of my data and re-install
everything. :-)
With a fresh install, KDE works just fine.

I have been using debian stable for about a year now, and last week I
installed sarge. (Upgrading didn't go so well.)
I got a new video card on the weekend and I can get it working using:
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86
But when I installed sarge, I was asked if I want to auto configure
