Grettings (again), Found it! The problem was with 'yiff', a sound server which is suggested by the 'xshipwars' package. I hardly switch off the machine that I installed it on, but when it was rebooted (I'll have to talk to my SO about that one), 'yiff' opened /dev/dsp. This caused everything el
