I am new to GNU/linux and want to start with debian. Can you provide
me a detailed description on how to install and boot debian live using
USB?
Your subject is pretty much correct. When grub (I'm assuming you have
grub installed) is not installed into the MBR, the installer marks the
boot partition (well, the one where you did install grub) as active
because it will not load otherwise.
But that should not make your system unboo
I don't know if its just my screwed up system or debian, but this has
happened twice now.
Installed debian once with the w32 installer and once with the normal
installer. Both times I chose not to install the MBR. Upon rebooting I
found my system unbootable. To fix it I had to boot with hir

Is there something like this for debian that would run under windows ? I
don't have a debian system yet.

I don't understand what do you mean with "install the bootloader to the
partition itself" a bootloader can only sit in the MBR to be useful.

I'd very much appreciate any help, as this is getting a bit frustrating.
Oh, BTW, I tried turning off the printer and looking at the file under
/var/spool/lpd/lp; it was fine at that point, no garbling evident.

I could add lp to /etc/modules, but suspect I'm missing a basic printer
package which is supposed to take care of this by putting something in
/etc/modprobe.d/. Does anyone happen to know?
Thanks,
Nikhil.

se it got in the way. I then
rebooted, and the situation seems exactly the same: no /dev/dsp, no *oss

Is all this documented? - I notice I probably should have known about
alsaconf, but din't.

doesn't work with udev mounted on /dev, or at least would need to be

Can anyone point me in the right direction to get this set up properly?
Or, indeed, does Debian have one of its usual neat and automatic setup
tricks for this, and have I just
the outgoing
stuff; probably it's already doing the latter, but not the former, and for
that you'll need to set up the appropriate firewall rule in the router.
I'm no expert on this stuff, but I hope this may have been of some help.

I tried to play around to see if it solves the problem.Problem was
solved but one day wine failed to behave as required and produced
errors.I was wondering if it was because of upgrading wine which I had
done.
