usermod should do it. Check the man page but I think the following will
do it..
usermod -g

root is generally considered to be pretty tacky. I'll bet mail from root
won't be accepted on the particular server regardless of what mailer you
use.

you need in /etc/ppp/options

filter
spam (well, help filter it anyway). Then use pine to read the mail.
You'll need to write a short script that downloads you mail with the POP3
client and feeds the mail file to procmail for sorting but that's pretty
easy.
