The problem was with my iptables rules. I used to forget to open the
loopback interface for the applications querying the loopback interface.
They used to wait on the lo interface.
Sorry for the inconvenience and thanks for the help.

And yes, if I login to xserver as root, every thing works perfectly
fine. Why does it give problems with a normal user?

I don't think that this is got some thing to do with the applications. I
think there is some thing with the environment. Some of the X
applications seem to work in the end, only that they take a long time to

It's a bug in 'dpkg-reconfigure snort-mysql' for woody. I installed
Sarge and its works in it. Thanks for the help.

Hi,
I installed Sarge (Debian 3.1 testing) on my machine. It looks very
nice. It was a basic install and I selected the Desktop Environment
packages only during install. I was able to answer the right questions
and gnome started very well. I also made a normal user account. However,

Fellows,
Can you guide me or point me to some document(s) that would allow me to
setup snort/acid on Debian. I am especially interested on running snort
and acid (apache/mysql etc) on the same machine.
If you have time, here is the problem that I am facing...
I am not able to log into mysql. I
Nothing there as well.
I have also configured the sshd_config file so that the sshd binds to
*.22 local port when I see it with netstat. The foreign host in netstat
is *.*, incase some one among you wonders. The crazy machine lets in

It's not the firewall. It's the ssh configuration, I think.
When I connect using the putty on windows, its logs says connection
reset by peer. Some things there with the damn ssh configuration.
When I use SSh secure shell from www.ssh.com, it says Connection closed
by remote host.

Didar,
Well, I don't have any rule for the OUTPUT chain and its Policy is

Dah.. :-) thanks for the help. You guys are life savers.
Also, after adding this it didn't work either. Then I realized that
since I was trying to ssh from the same machine, I need another rule for
the INPUT chain to ACCEPT every thing from the lo interface. Even though
I use

I am running sshd on my Debian machine with iptables. I want
it to accept ssh connections from outside. I added this rule and it doesn’t
work.
Iptables –A INPUT –p tcp –sport ssh –j

Why do you think its not able to match this rule? When I
turn off the firewall, I am able to
That works that's what I was looking for.
But I still didn't get the working. dpkg-reconfigure iptables just make
the symbolic links to /etc/init.d/iptables. Where does is say to start
it. I mean calling /etc/init.d/iptables alone doesn't work and simply
puts out the help.

Nabil.

But that would be just like running /etc/init.d/iptables. But what we
need is running the command '/etc/init.d/iptables start'.
I tried to make a link with the start parameter like
>ln -s /etc/init.d/iptables '/etc/rcS.d/S38iptables start'
But the above also doesn't run it the way we want it t
Fellows,
I know the script /etc/init.d/iptables can be used to save
the rules. I made it save in the ‘active’ rule set. But what is the
standard way to run ‘/etc/init.d/iptables load active’ at boot
time. I manually added a symbolic link to the /etc/rcS.d folder for ‘/etc/init.d/iptable
Dear Fellows,
When I install Debian with kernel 2.2, the Ethernet card
works fine. But when I install Debian with kernel 2.4, I don’t see any
sign of lo or eth0 any where. I am new to Linux, and Debian in particular.
Please advice. From the top of my head, I think that the kernel module
