I have an acentia P that I could never get X to work on with the cirrus
drivers. I was able to get rather nice results using just the generic vesa
driver. Its good enough for most 2D stuff, even doom.

am running, but 1 in a dozen nmap scans (as root) show some ports that are
open for a second or so. Why would

ws. I think you need kernel 2.5
for USB 2.0 support, at least until someone backports it to 2.4.

ply regard Debian as its superior in
terms of functionality and philosophy of installation/maintenance. In
particular, the fact that each Debian package is accompanied by a
description you can read _before_ downloading/installing the package has
been of tremendous help.
