but not disallowed.
I can't remember which manpage I read this from, and it doesn't appear
to be in the xrdb or xorg manpages, but I know I read this somewhere a
while back...

You should run xrdb -load ~/.Xdefaults to reload the file. However,
some intricacies can be involved if the program name launched from the
menu is not `xterm`.

first, in which case that might be why).
