re doing a demonstration of "Samba for Windows clients" next weekend... so defniately taking the Sarge HDD along, and planning to
load Ubuntu Server 7.04 on the HDD currently with Debian Etch.
We also filed a bug report at the following URL:
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=4274
Suggestions?
Seems I had the answer all along...

I forgot that /etc/default/dhcp3-server exists, and that had a blank interfaces
entry. That solved it!

eth0 is the correct interface for the Etch machine in question.
Suggestions?

Simply adding the following line to file: /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist
blacklist snd_cs46xx
solved the trouble. For some reason Linux mis-detects the cs423x chip as a
cs46xx chip which is Crystal's PCI chip.

Significant changes have been made between Sarge and Etch. The files mentioned long long ago to cure PnP trying to load an AC97 driver for a ThinkPad 600E with integrated CS423x chip are no longer
there. Where has the inequivalent functionality been moved?

Where should I set that kernel flag?
Never mind, I found the spot.
First, to test it out, I edited /etc/lilo.conf adding an append="acpi=off"
line. That indeed worked.
So I reinstalled booting the Etch CD with options: expert acpi=off
Installation went smo
kernel level was/is: 2.6.12-10.
The battery is dead on the ThinkPad, so it will be of little issue to me! ;-)
Thanks!

All vendors involved make this MUCH harder than it really needs to be.
Thankfully now we have a resolution.

The first half (pppoe in the modem) I am fine with. This connects to a

Just put the Netopia in bridge mode and run PPPoE on the Linux
firewall/router.
Been there, tried that.
Happen to know how
used them, did not like a network being attached
- they wanted to charge per box and provide their own equipment.
Since they advertise 5 static IP's, I think they have reason to suspect the
clients have some sort of network. ;-)
