This is a problem that I had after an upgrade. The fix is really quite simple.
You can either remove the '@S99xdm' link in /etc/rc2.d or you can use 'mv
@S99xdm @off99xdm'. Either option works. Debian will then boot into run level
2 at the command line instead of booting into X.

Just a shot in the dark, but have you had to change any on the wiring during
this process? It almost sounds like you may have a broken wire in one of the
patch cables.
My first try would be to plug a different cable into the NIC and see if you get
the same results or not. Possibly just re-plug
Peter,
A quick 'Linux Training' search on google will give you all the options that
you want. 987,000 in .12 seconds.

Just gave this a try on my Debian 3.0 machine.
Works in xterm
Does not work in rxvt
Does not work from cmd
VERY handy for 'dpkg --configure . Don't have to guess at what
the last few letters/numbers might be.
Thanks,

Only thing I would add is that it would be really nice to be able to get
this to print properly.
I broke my Debian box yesterday playing around with a couple of
testing/unstable packages, so I'm stuck on this NT box for a few
days. Have a Winprinter too, so that is a pita, but I'll live with
