in the Debian's default config, the "smtp" line is commented out!!!
I.e:
In the default Debian configuration, EXIM (the default MTA)
would be spawned by inetd but inetd by default deosn't accept SMTP
connection.

Why the PAP (ppp) passwd is shown by xconsole. /var/log/ppp
can only be read by adm group, but xconsole can be seen
by anyone. Isn't it a security issue ???

I have just installed ham from SLS. Everything is fine except X
in Hi (16bits) or True (24bits) color.

I remember having seen somewhere that you can use the joystick to make a clean
reboot. That's handy when X freezes and your keyboard and mouse get stuck. Any

The proxy of my company is Raptor style, 3-steps user+passwd+account. I've had
to modify dselect's ftp scripts (setup, update, install) to get throught the
firewalls. Perl5's Net::FTP can pass throught most of the firewalls.

I've got some diskcorruptions on my root partition. After some dpkg --install,
my system is now running fine. But I can't change run-level anymore...
$ telinit 1
No more processes in this runlevel
Another question, what is the file /etc/runlevel ??? I might have lost it

x27; !!! :-((( (My Debian-1.1 CD is lost somewhere :-<) ...
