I'm new to Debian and only recently set up my first "working" system.
Following the security advisory today, I attempted to upgrade my kernel
with 'apt-get update' and 'apt-get upgrade'. It doesn't show any
updates available. I do have the update server in my sources.list:

When I telnet to port 22 on my 3.0r2 server, I see this:
SSH-2.0-OpenSSH_3.4p1 Debian 1:3.4p1-1.woody.3
Isn't that considered sensitive information? Why advertise it so
blatantly? Can I turn this banner off?
Thanks,
Krum

Depending on your FTP server, there's probably a way to configure what
interfaces it listens on and what users are allowed to log into it. Yo

They did; it's called redhat-config-packages. But it's GUI-only, AFAIK.
There's also apt-rpm, b
I'm new to Debian and wireless networking at the same time. I've
successfully installed Woody on my laptop, but I have yet to get the
wlan-ng drivers to build. (Or build and install a kernel, for that
matter -- something I consider routine on RH.) I'm hoping I'll have
things sorted out by tomorr

Should I be using GCC 3.x for building kernels on Woody? I'm using 2.95
and I keep getting errors like undefined symbols and modules not being
built or installed. I've tried both 'make-kpkg kernel-image' and the
standard 'make dep && make clean && make bzImage && make modules && make

I'm trying to get a new Netgear MA521 802.11b card working in Woody.
According to what I've read, this card uses the Realtek RTL 8180L
chipset and some have apparently had success with it in various distros.
(The Linksys WPC11v.4 is supposed to have the same chipset.)

That's what I was looking for. Thanks.

I've installed 3.0r1 a few times now on my laptop, and I'm still running into
problems. I used apt-get to install a newer kernel-image and matching
kernel-pcmcia-modules. It boots, but pcmcia won't load and I have no network.
Assuming I start with a fresh install, what commands should I run t
I feel like RedHat has sold out on me as a paying customer, so I'm looking at Debian.
I've run into a few problems, though...
First, the framebuffer console looks hideous on my laptop. I searched the list
archives, but the only solutions I found were using the kernel parameter 'vga=normal'
