Short answer: no, any 'force' is likely to break things. You're actually
mileage may vary, so you may be very lucky, you may not. You want to take
that risk? It could be a great learning experience; or hours and hours just
chasing your tail ;-) It's up to you.

upgrade, delete the .deb files in /var/cache/apt/archives so you won't run
out of free space; then run apt-get to go through only 'contrib', etc. I
have NOT tried this, so I don't know whether it will work or whether it will
come back to haunt you later, so YAMMV ;-)
