This problem is driving me batty. However I wonder if this is a network
problem. I log into the console and i get the pauses, however if I run
pine, I do not get pauses until i leave pine. any ideas ?

I have 3 machines that are Intel Pentium 2 machines, one is a dual
processor and the others are not. However these machines have a real
annoying pause, it lasts from 2- 15 seconds and happens quite a bit.
This is real annoying, anyone know what could be causing this ?
The dual has it the worst

are you using a make file ?
I had a problem that with the ^M in the make file made it
not work properly. What was the exact error message ?

Thanks for all the help, I did recompile the kernel and made the modules.
however I ran into a little problem, cc1 was not found in the path. I
manually added it to the path (strange that it was not in the path).
I noticed that there are 2 places to define modules
/etc/conf.modules
and
/etc/modu
I was about to recompile the kernel to add support for the soundblaster 16
and wondered should I remove any modules and rebuild them even though I
am only adding one module ? Can I run make modules only ? Or do I have
to do make dep;make clean;make zImage;make modules;make modules_install ?

If you type ping -c 5 www.microsoft.com
how long does it take before you see the first
line ?
This almost sounds like a DNS timeout.

Is there a tool to set up ppp links or should I be doing things like
#!/bin/sh
PATH="/usr/bin:/usr/sbin"
pppd connect chat -v -f /etc/ppp.chatscript /dev/ttyS0 38400 modem crtscts
etc...
I dont have this working yet but, this should be enough to get the idea
across...

The comments about having to run configure over and over, does this apply
to the cdrom as well ? I have a T! at work, so if there is another way
to install that would be better let me know.

What are you going to us this machine for ?
If you are going to use it for a web server for the intranet,
just load linux.
If you have some other purp
Ok here goes, I looked at the list of stuff available for debian and I
thought I knew a thing or too about Linux until I ordered this debian
cdrom. I run an ISP and a Linux user group. However I just cannot seem
to get debian's dselect correctly. I get through the conflict resolution
and the
I ordered the cdrom from cheapbytes and I made the disks and installed
the floppies (this is kinda dumb, why not install off of the cdrom?)
but I have not figured out how to get dselect to work. So at this point
all I got off of the cd is the disks. Is this normal ? If I must use
dpkg, where ca
