I have a problem configuring my debian potato to use dhcp. I'm
connected to the Internet via cable modem. The network card is
configured to irq=10 and io=0x300. The module is smc-ultra. The card
should be ok.
When I start 'pump', it tries to get dynamic ip from server using
dhcp, but fa

I had the same problem, though the "looping" eventually lead to total
freezing of X.
It appeared when I had installed mozilla M17-3 from woody. (My system is
still mostly potato.) First time I solved it installing gdm again. Then
I tried mozilla again, crash, and I had to install helixg

Well, there may be reasons which I don't know.

Note that apt-get downloads and installs its packages from internet. If you
want install from cd, you can use apt-cdrom or dselect.

ran update-modules and rebooted, I got exactly same error message as you

means that something (when error occurs?) is trying to run esd, though
it is already running.

apt, apt-get, apt-cdrom and dpkg when you have got your debian running.

ethernet card and the document, rest is very simple.
First read the document. Make sure your ethernet card is working, then
install the software and reboot. You may need to change some
configuration options, but everything is hopefully explained in the
document.

nel witch was same version as previous? Did you
also move your old modules from /usr/lib/modules/ to
somewhere else before installing modules? I think I got same kind of
messages when I didn't move the modules before install.

Add a dot before its name:
mv topsecret .topsecret.
