Hello,
When someone sends me an attachment in word 97 or whatever, what is my
best option for reading it with the software available on my Debian disk
or the debian site?

Hello,
The linux HOW-TO compatibility list does not include this model, though
it does include the Scanmaker III. Is anyone successfully using the
Scanmaker IV and do you have any tips to get me started?
Thanks.

You are almost there - you just need one more step. After editing
lilo.conf you need to run /sbin/lilo. So, after editing:
Elsadigroot:# /sbin/lilo
Your machine should inform you of the changes made. Good luck!

Hello,
I have a home machine which I'm not too worried about security wise. If
I don't go on-line as root, is a difficult to type and remember password
really necessary?
Thanks.

can only ctrl-alt-del to start over.
Is there a way to boot so that I am both entering a command to boot into
hdb1 (the floppy is set to boot at hdb3) and also disabling kdm so I can
get in there and work on this problem?
Thanks very much for any help.

need to type "XF86Setup" and if that doesn't work either install the VGA
server via dselect or type "xf86config" to get X running.
If you had X installed previously, try "XF86Setup" at the command prompt
and check out your settings to see what's crashing X.

Sandy,
You need to load xpm4 & libc6 first, then install wp and it should work. Runs
fine on
Debian.

ause it is too far out in my hard drive? Any suggestions what to do
or which
HOW-TO to read would be appreciated. I don't care about the SUSE but would
sort of like
to get my Debian back!
It's an antique Cyrix 686.
Thanks very much.

no Unix experience. I think it's great. That doesn't
mean I
think anything should change about Debian to accomodate them, it just means we
should
be careful to be welcoming and not elitist, because even if it makes you feel
cool,
elitism never helps in the long run. That's all. I meant to nudge gently the
language used, not urge any wholesale OS changes.

e, then it doesn't. My own vote is to discard
every element
of geekish elitism immediately. That doesn't mean discarding the Unix way of
doing things,
it just means helping others get there more smoothly.
Erik Ryberg
Yes, you need to install it through apt. I think it's called xlib.so.4 or
something
like that. Scroll through in dselect and you will find it. Install and all
will be
well.

In xf86config when it asks where your mouse is, default /dev/mouse, try
/dev/psaux. Also tell it youhave a ps/2 mouse when it asks what kind of
mouse you have. you can also do this in XF86Setup.

Are you mounting your cd drive? You need to mount the drive before dselect.
Also, is everything going correctly when you choose install method (the menu
item).
Select "apt" or "cdrom."
