I think the main thing I had to do to get the behaviour I wanted was to uncomment "XkbDisable" in my /etc/X11/XF86Config. er (less sophisticated, less capable) than those of Debian or Redhat. Also Slackware _does_ have interim upgrades, both for new software versions and to fix security holes.
