1) Nethack has a problem with the /var/lib/games/nethack/perm(?) file,
and claims there's no permission to write to it. I changed
/usr/lib/games/nethack/nethack to setuid, and it worked (it was setgid
already). I presume setuid was the wrong thing to do; what's the real
scoop?

I get the following messages in syslog, right after the ifconfigs:
Oct 15 07:34:39 wildebeest kernel: portmap: RPC call returned error 111

I was installing 1.3.1, and had selected file-rc. It unpacked the
files, but when setting them up, I had quite a few packages give
warnings/errors in update-rc.d. Was this a bug? If I reinstall
without file-rc, then install it by itself later, is it safe to use?

Regarding my problem with login/passwd/su failing, I've tracked
it a bit further. It seems that getpass() is failing, and more, that
it's actually /dev/tty that's completely screwed up.
Symptoms:
$ echo howdy > /dev/tty
$ cat /dev/tty
howdy
$ cat /dev/tty

Yes, the libc mess would cause a headache. Personally, though, I
would like to see something similar. But basically, the intermediate
release would not have major changes, but instead have packages that
fix important bugs, an
rk problems and I could log in.
- Autofs seemed ok, so I uninstalled amd.
- Shortly after this, logins stopped working. This happened while still
logged in on one virtual console.

Because I need to build 2.1 kernels.
I know what I'm doing, except for perl. I thought it would be quicker

No, I told it "dists/unstable/main". And after telling it, it went
and verified that they existed. Then it went and grabbed the list of

What's the "passive mode" option for dselect (ftp) anyway?
I've never been able to find an explanation of it.

But what do you feed to dselect?

Ack, I can't boot, and I can't figure out the problem. Any
help is appreciated; even if you don't want to read to the end
of the message, at least some hints on where to find docs will
help (no, I can't read linux man pages).
Symptom is that when I boot, I get something like (I had to write it do
