there was only very experimental code for 2.6. Is that out of date,
or is there some other project that does remotes? Sorry if I've missed

Err... how would this materially differ from advertising, say, the
Debian distribution in your sig?
P.S. I'm by no means an 'old-timer' on the list, but I've been here long
enough to know the real benefit it derives from your active
or less, anyway) and the problem went away. I'm not sure what
was the original cause, however... I suspect that recompiling the 2.4.24
kernel with modules (or just the module, perhaps?) would also have
solved the problem...
That's may well be overkill, however.

As I recall, this has to do with the order they're recognized by the
kernel. If you get your networking support through modules, try changing
the order in which the modules load up (perhaps the order they show up
in /etc/modules).
Out of curiosity, why do you care which is which
pkg and friends
should be sufficient if you don't want to move to 2.6. HTH.

gns the cdrom a
different bus id than the SCSI emulation stuff--but I don't know
that much about it.

...gives me a device list with my ATAPI cd writer in it, and:
cdrecord -v ATAPI:0,0,0 blank=fast cdrom.iso
...burns the .iso.
Once again, apologies in advance for irrelevance.
