OK, a brief answer
having to resort to my (6 week old) backup of /dev/hda1, please?

(Extremely stressed about losing all my, and my Mother's, lovely
multimedia files.)
I may as well answer my own question for the benefit of the archives; I
finally managed to set up my hard drive partitions by switching to another
virtual terminal (tty2) and running fdisk instead of cfdisk.
I seem to be having some difficulty setting up my modem under Debian;
wvdial gives an input/output error and dies, and ppp, which I've set up
with all the appropriate parameters, doesn't do much at all. Any ideas,
please?
