Could not find OpenSSL 0.9.6.2 on Debian

/jabberd-2.0s2# I've tried it with --with-openssl=/usr/lib thinking it might be able to use /usr/lib/libcrypto.so.0.9.6 I've also tried with --with-openssl=/usr/lib/ssl . It still dies with "checking for OpenSSL in /usr/lib/ssl... no" Any suggestions? Thanx for your time,
