Problem compiling Debian "potato" - "make dep" errors

"make dep", I've got the followings errors "scripts/mkdep.c    ctype.h : not such file or directory". And, I don't understand why, because I've got the ctype.h module.   I'm sorry if it looks like a newbie question, but I really need help !!   Thak you very much...   Christophe Abrial.
