I have two questions:
(1) In what file does the Debian distribution keeps info such as IP
address, netmask, gate way, etc? I tried to change the IP address
of my machine by editing the
/etc/init.d/network file; however, this file doesn't seems to be
read at startup time

I am running Debian 2.1 slink on a IBM ThinkPad. I upgraded my kernel to
2.2.12
and upgraded the packages suggested at
"http://www.debian.org/releases/2.1/running-kernel-2.2";. However, since
I upgraded my
kernel and the suggested packages, the ftp client I am using
(ftp_0.10-3) gives me
