I use the following layout on 5 Debian boxes. All of my machines have
either 16 or 32 megs of memory. One of
1 - Linux 2.0.6, default Debian kernel
2 - Linux 2.0.6, stable (with CD-ROM)
3 - Linux 2.0.29, latest w/CD-ROM
You have 10 seconds to make a choice, after which option #2 will
automatically be chosen.

ed into the shadow password utility suite. You can get an
unofficial Debian package from
ftp://serek.arch.pwr.wroc.pl/pub/shadow/
I got the package and extracted just the user* and group* utilities into
my /usr/local. They work fine with both shadow and standard /etc/passwd
files.
