I'm sorry for posting this question as I know it has been asked
recently, but I can't find it in the archives or my inbox. I just tried
to install a few packages using dselect. dselect is set up to grab the
packages off a cd. As far as I know I've done nothing differently,

correct me if I'm wrong, but this worked for a non-root user: To not
require a password for logging in, edit /etc/shadow and remove the
second field from the user's entry. So for root, it would look
something like:
"root::###:###:###:###:::"
where each # is 0 or more digits
It's also handy for
hundreds of people
on the list at least one of which might learn from my folly. ;)

Can anyone tell me what needs to be done so that I can get more colours
on my screen? Thanks in advance

I recently picked up an old (circa 1986) Digital, DEC VSXXX-AA mouse. I
picked it up because it didn't use a track ball, but rather an horizontal
and vertical roller on the underside. It look kinda like it had a PS/2
connection, but it doesn't. What are the odds I could get this to work on

I'll be setting up a network between my linux box and 2 other
machines for a cable modem. I hear that there are some network cards
that just don't work for linux. Crazy I know, but that's the rumour.
Does any one know off any cards I should avoid or any they would
recomend? Thanks.

help would be great.

Have you tried using "pppconfig" (need to be root)?
Your modem should be found at /dev/SttyX where "X" is (modem com port -
1). Eg, if your modem is on com 4, then you can reach it at /dev/Stty3.
some people make a symbolic link ("ln -s /dev/SttyX /dev/modem") to make
things easier.

Yup, still no use.

? Source and package have been prematurely deleted, it would be a
pain to redownload and install. Solutions without those steps will be
apreciated :)

Yup, that was the problem. My /etc/fstab didn't specify to mount it
'noexec' but I guesse that's what happens when you leave out 'defaults'
from the line. Problem solved. Thanks all for the help.

t has anything to do with it. No executable files will run in this
directory. What's going on?

oops. I was just pointing to the /debian directory. While
poining at hamm all the packages that were missing reappeared. However,
specifying the directories "main, non-free, contrib" won't find .deb
files even though it updated. hrmph. I'll look around tonight and see if

Okay, that makes sense then. But how can I now get dselect to list all
the available packages at ftp.debian.org and not just the ones on my CD?

dselect does not seem to want to update packages for me. Previously, I
had set [A]ccess method to CD-ROM that had only contrib packages. that
went fine. But now, when I try to switch back to ftp access, everything
seems to go well, but dselect thinks only contrib packages are available.

I have the exact thing happen, but I think my message gets through any

I'm having trouble getting dselect to find new packages.
I chose the Access method as ftp and pointed it to ftp.debian.org, and
went with the defaults. I then chose Update and it went through all the
different sections and said that the packages were already updated.
