When you say "connect ". Do you mean with just ssh for administrative
tasks, or we talking connect with scp and downloading / uploading something.
Theres many way too look at this. You may want to give a more detailed

start tightening your services up etc.
For apache (dont forget to tighten the conf) use nikto to help to scan test
vulnerabilities.
For ssh, maybe add a line in the conf file like Allowusers for a start.
Oh and check you logs.
