Setting your keyboardmap to us_intl works for me in KDE apps, like this:
setxkbmap us_intl
Don't know if abiword and openoffice react te same as KDE apps.

All system wide configuration is done in the directory
/etc. If your have a local network connection you
wil have to edit /etc/network/interfaces for your
