Strange, because all I had to do was copying the firmware. But, I have
no entry for the module in /etc/modules. It gets automatically loaded
by hotplug.

Hi Dick,
In case you don't have the firmware already, it has to be downloaded from
http://ipw2100.sourceforge.net/downloads.php and the resulting archive
extracted to /usr/lib/hotplug/firmware.

a simple "dselect update" made information for most uninstalled packages
available. There are still some packages with no description, but I
guess these are packages which are indeed not available.

the dpkg package manager doesn't give a package description for
uninstalled packages. A sample output of dpkg -l '*mysql*' is given below:
