mentioning that laptop keyboards come apart very easily, and the little
pieces therein practically define "choking hazard". Supervision is
essential.

I ran into something similar recently, which was solved by adding the
following line to the device section of /etc/X11/XF86Config-4:
O
start processing /etc/modutils/nvidia-kernel-2.4.4
alias char-major-195 NVdriver
### update-modules: end processing /etc/modutils/nvidia-kernel-2.4.4
which confused things. Getting rid of the wrong ones got it working
right. I should probably tidy up in general, I doubt I'll ever need
to boot
