Don't. That kernel is very broken. Switch to the latest 4.8 kernel
available from either unstable or kernel.org, or compile the latest

Thank you Hans, Alexandre, and Jan for your quick response.
update-grub2 has enabled booting to all (2) of my OSes :-)
Now the prospect of massive, messy recovery is gone. I like Jan's idea
of a small "boot/rescue" OS, especially if it could be on a USB flash
drive. Something to work on later.
Hi all,
I solved my problem: Somehow I must have corrupted the metadata in my
volume groups. Scanning through the directory /etc/lvm/archive on the
NAS and my linux box, there were several historical configuration
files for each of my disks. I found the files that represented the
last working setu

Hi,
I recently installed Debian Jessie on a ThinkPad W550s. It's a pretty
standard installation, beginning with a fairly minimal package set,
then adding Xfce and a bunch of other stuff, including some Gnome / GTK
applications and a few things from backports. I'm currently running
kernel 4.7.0-0.b

Sorry I can't resist;
Seriously tho; If you had RTFM you would have known systemd and friends
were going to be the default on upgrade and taken steps to migrate your
init.d scripts beforehand.
Also you heavily modified base (which by your own admission, you had -
"stripped down") and you expect

Hi guys,
thanks for trying to help.
Here's the whole story: The two 1 TB disks originally were in a Synology
NAS unit, not configured (to my knowledge) as any kind of RAID. The second
disk was only physically installed in the NAS after the first one had been
filling up. The NAS GUI showed the dis

Hello,
You can try, running in terminal:

Hi, I am one disgruntled punter.
I have been using Debian since early 1990s. I use it to do useful work
so any problem with the o/s is a pain in the butt. meaning I have to
spend scarce time resolving bugs that should have been removed before it
was released. -classic garage software I suppose
Net install noticed that Windows 7 was present, said it would provide a
choice to select it in the boot menu, but failed to do that. The boot
menu has Debian Jessie and the advanced boot option. Thinking I must
have screwed something up, I deleted the Debian partition and
re-installed carefully
