I will try to find out the setting for my laptop. Till now, I have been
using Gnome's GUI to change the brightness. Through the menu, go to system
settings and change the brightness.

A MKV which disables the sound in VLC. I had to restart VLC to get the
sound back. Other MKVs works fine.
