On a hunch, I used Evince to print the aforementioned PDF as a file to
postscript. The LaserJet prints that .ps file just fine. And, fuerther
Googling reveals that PDF get converted to postscript when being sent to the
printer. So, maybe pdftops is to blame?

Unfortunately, I think that gnome applets are quite lacking in general (if
that's what you're looking for). I tried looking around a few years ago for
something similar and never quite found one that was native to Gnome. Any
reasons why KshowMail isn't being considered anymore?

have an IP.

It has the usual thin analog audio cable connected to the motherboard
as all IDE drives.
AFAIK SATA drives don't have this cable anymore but they work
anyway... I guess digital audio goes through data cable.
