Hi, The keyboard under Xorg does not work as expected on my newly installed lenny -- modification keys don't work any more. For example, I can't even switch virtual consoles. Ctrl-Alt-F1 gives a beep and ";5P". Shift-Fx keys don't work in my editors either. I have no clue what could be wrong

Hi, the distributoins you refer to are likely to have much newer kernels then Debian Etch. You should start by trying Etchnhalf which has a newer kernel http://www.uk.debian.org/News/2008/20080726 This should be available as a net install from a local Debian mirror. You could also try the Test
