However, when I insert a CD say, and run
# fdisk -l
it does not even see the CD volume,
so there is no device to mount.

I can run gconf-editor, but there is no NetworkManagerApplet
under apps.
I see that there is something called NetworkManager and
NetworkManagerDispatcher
under /usr/sbin; but when I run gconf-editor, there's no
apps->NetworkManagerApplet
entry.
