I think 'dvd-rip' can do everything you are looking for, or simply
'transcode' if you are a cli lover. Just keep care of dependencies when
installing.

This is the first time smartd has ever complained about the disk.
I rebooted and fsck complained about errors on that filesystem but didn't

I have just succeeded in installing debian (sarge) on a 715n.
Are you still having difficulties in installing debian?

Thanks for the replys guys but i managed to sort this. I used a rescue/install
cd from here
http://people.debian.org/~jgoerzen/dfs/html/
with a most similar kernel, i mounted proc and sys on my mounted drive
then chrooted in and created a new initrd image, rebooted and it was fine.
