but I also have a file /etc/apt/preferences. So maybe I'm using bad the

sources.list includes volatile for these things, but reading the backports

Another fairly easy approach I forgot to mention would be VNC, but in that
would involve opening the appropriate port on your router, and replacing
cygwin/X with a vncviewer on the laptop.
