I can boot up with kernel-image-2.6.7-1-686 but not
kernel-image-2.6.7-1-686-smp. The booting just half soon after
starting. Can you give me some suggestions?
The hardware is, Intel m/b w 875r chip set and P4-2.8GHz processor.

I have installed Debian linux on an unremarkable Pentium 4-class system. It
boots to the KDE.
Now, my nVidia GeForce 4 Ti 4200 is not recognized by KDE. It therefore
uses it as generic SVGA. This yields a maximum resolution which is quite
small and makes it impossible for me to use GIMP

If you have a smp kernel it will automatically detect the extra kernel after reboot,

I am new to debian and looking for some help. I have been practicing with
debian installs also adding new hardware to existing systems. I tried
adding a new nic and a harddrive to a system. I could not get either to
work. When I take the beta 4 sarge install disk and run the install it
