Ok,
This is a very good reason. I did get the binary installed and
running happily. I still like the idea of .deb so I'll clean and
re-install when they come out, but this probably the best reason
to wait.

Need a little advice. I just loaded potato on my machine. I'm using a ps2
style mouse with the psaux device. I also have gpm loaded and the mouse
works fine with it. The trouble come when I load the GUI (gnome at this
point). All the settings in XF86Config are the same as I've had before
/dev/psaux
I get the message "Segmentation fault" when attempting
to run xf86config, XF86Setup, xstart, and xinit. No
other information is given. It started after I
installed gpm_1.14-3.deb, although that may not be the
cause of the problem. I remove gpm but still get the
error.

What's the difference between kernel-source and the linux-2.*.tar.gz?
To compile your own kernel, if you use the linux* one, you use make-kpkg
after unpacking.
If you use kernel-source, do you unpack it? If yes, how? And then, what

Firewalling is done in the kernel and set up with ipchains.
Debian has a couple of packages which can be useful with this,
ipchains-perl and ipmasq.

I'm planning to install debian on my machine at home. Since potato is
not finished yet I thought that I'd install slink (2.1-r4 there are two
iso-images from December 1999 available).
But I need to have an up to date version of at least Ada (gnat),
Gtk+, GtkAda and vim packages and preferably more

Hi,
In setting up Mandrake, I have a good XConfig file that supports my
monitor. I had no such initial success with Debian. I tried copying over
my XConfig file over and that didn't work, so which part of the original
Mandrake version refering to the monitor do I need to move over then and

Hi,
I'm curious while Gimp 1.04 installs in my root directory as .gimp, why
does Gimp 1.1x go in at .gimp-1.1x? Anyway to have it just go in as
.gimp, I thought at first it wouldn't overwrite the original Gimp
directory so I removed it but the install repeated the directory entry.
Thanks for the
Hi,
I'm going to be making the move from Mandrake, which I've pretty much
figured out, to Debian soon. I'd like to know if in Slink/Potato I go
with one of the pre-selected install packages (if so, which) or with
custom (again, if so, which) to get the following:
1. A basic OS install with man, h

/var/www should belong to you, i don't think any debian package will

AFAIK there is no optimization switch for anything but plain pentium,
which does not buy much

Well, the only packages you really need are thos needed to compile the
kernel, you'll probably have them installed already (gcc, cpp, make,
etc.).
If you want to use make menuconfig, and that's what you want ;), you'll
also need ncurses installed.
You shouldn't run into any problems, but you never

I have slink installed with kernel 2.0.38, and want to upgrade to 2.2.15.
I'm happy with kernel compilation etc, but want to know whats the correct
way to go about getting the kernel sources under debian? Which packages do
I need? Should I expect to run into problems with any libraries?
Cheers
