only TRUE source for information. You go to any book store you see 7 or 8
books that deal with slackware and redhat, why not Debian?

I just used kernel-image to update from kernel 2.0.0 to 2.0.27 Everything
went fine but the module sound in 2.0.0 does not seem to exist in 2.0.27.
Could someone tell what exactly it is for and whether a module exists that

The Linux driver seems to have problems with some floppy drives. I suggest
you write the floppies from another PC. You should, by the way, be able to
set any of the first 4 partitions on the first hard drive to be "active"
and boot from it.

Here's how to find out such things:
/var/lib/dpkg/available is a list of all packages, where they reside,
dependencies, size, etc. This may not be the most elegant way to extract
the desired info, but I just typed 'more /var/lib/dpkg/available', then

I posted some odd things.
Now a further question: After the emergency stop caused by errors
dselect asks, if I want to delete the installed stuff. I said yes
and now I get messages of the type:
leaving: stable/.../package.deb
for each package. But it takes a terr
The most likely problem then, is that some news directories associated with inn
are still present in /etc/syslog.conf. Delete these entries in this file (as I
remember they are near the beginning) and then everything should work correctly.
(I had the same problem)

I have an Debian GNU/Linux 1.2.2.
The problem I have is as follows:
After booting the PC, the syslogd daemon is permanently in the run
state. Therefore the PC (486DX33) is very slow. When I kill the syslogd,
and start it by hand with "/sbin/syslogd", the syslogd now sleeps.

If you're using xdm, it is quite easy to add buttons to the login
screen to enable the machine to be rebooted or shut down - a sample Tk
script was posted to the list earlier this year, and we are currently
using a modified version here. I can post more details if there is

It seems that shell scripts i have made in my debian distrib. doesn't run.
you need to put ./ in front in order for it to execute.
i have chmod the script it to be executable, my bash shell is in

Tried unsuccessfully to install the current Debian (2.0.27 kernel) floppy
images downloaded from ftp.debian.org
I can boot up from the Rescue disk but unable to complete base installation.

Here at Institute of Computer Science we have large network of
Unites and some NT's for the first year. The problem with nt is that
the authentication process may be done only from nt server - we
don't want that. We are looking for some kind (ANY kind) of software
that can do authentication
