Bug: #846389
Today was released xserver 1.19.1.
So I have reinstalled xserver-xorg-core 2:1.19.0-3 and verified the return
of the problem.
Subsequently I have compiled new source and reinstalled it on existing
packages.
After logout and relogin I hav

cd ..
dpkg -i sddm_0.14.0-2_amd64.deb
apt-mark hold sddm
systemctl daemon-reload
systemctl restart sddm
After restart the service, the icons have reappeared.
Thanks,
Anthony

It appears when it's first started, kded5 dumps that debug log to
~/.xsession-errors, not syslog. That's much better, but still a huge
waste of disk space—especially since that log isn't rotated until
logout/login (which is often months).

aptitude upgrade to track testing, but now when I launch an xterm that
way, clicking the kwin close button (or picking close from the kwin

I've got nvidia-kernel-dkms 331.20-2 (from experimental), which is one
of the affected versions, apparently.
Interestingly, though, on one of the affected xterms, the mask is:

I downgraded to nvidia 319.76-1, and rebooted. After reboot, the problem
has vanished.
So this is probably the nVidia bug.
