I've been faced with the same problem (and the same work-around) after
my system crashed (actually rather a power loss). It seems that the
akregrator Archive ends up being “corrupted” very easily and/or
akregator does not sanitize it enough.

messed up (sent mail folder dissapeared and folders '~' and '#ftp'
showed up) and I keep getting error message quoted below. Kmail seems to
