installed. As a consequence, I get now bus errors when starting openoffice or
Data Explorer. I'm not sure if it's really necessary to change the libc just
for installing a new KDE version, but I hope everything will be allright
again soon.

I think, this is not a bug.
A simple work around to set the variable is to put
if [[ -z $XAUTHORITY ]]; then export XAUTHORITY=~/.Xauthority; fi;
in the $HOME/.bashrc file.

someone pointed me to a kde bug report which is identical to
my description:

That may have happened because I am really low on disk space and probably
had a disk full during compression?
