it has been closed with the false claim of being solved -- my answer
that this was not so, was ignored -- at least i never received an

since kde4, the kdm module of systemsettings does not offer any
convenient way to gain administrative rights to change the kdm
configuration.
a very long time it was said, kde4.4 will do taht again -- but after
yesterday's update, that brought kde4.

flicker like restarting X and displaying the kdm login dialog again.
